Discover the new Joya Smart and Joya Smart+
New hardware is a necessity for the progress of self-scanning. While we make sure to do our part with developing our self-scanning solution, it requires solid hardware supporting the latest features – further enhancing the self-scanning shopping experience.
The new Joya devices
The new Joya Smart and Joya Smart+ from Datalogic were introduced earlier this fall at NRF 2025: Retail's Big Show Europe in Paris, and they immediately caught the attention of major retailers. These new self-scanning devices represent a clear upgrade from existing self-scanning devices, both in design and functionality, and the rollout of the new Joya models is expected to begin in 2026. Let’s dive into the enhancements that comes with the new Joya Smart and Joya Smart+!
Device improvements
The next generation of self-scanning devices looks better than ever! The new Joya models feature improved ergonomics, and the 5-inch display provides an intuitive and user-friendly interface. To further lower the threshold for self-scanning, the Joya Smart devices also support Bluetooth headset connectivity, making the solution more accessible for visually impaired shoppers.
Not only is the design more user-friendly, but the new Joya Smart and Joya Smart+ also offer support for a wide range of new features, making them essential tools for the next generation of self-scanning technology.
Loss prevention with AI
Loss prevention remains one of the top priorities among retailers to this day. One of the most innovative new features is the rear AI camera, which continuously registers and verifies the cart’s contents—a smart and effective way to detect potential missed scans in real time. Combined with smart software such as EasyShop, this powerful technology enables retailers to significantly reduce shrinkage and strengthen overall loss prevention.
Wireless charging
Wireless charging is a smart way to ensure consistent and fast charging—a much-appreciated feature among retailers. With the new Joya Smart and Joya Smart+, wireless charging has been taken to the next level: it charges at the same speed as conventional pins. Furthermore, the new devices are compatible with existing Joya cradles, making the upgrade both seamless and cost-effective.
Protection against dust and water
While mainly used indoors, it is vital for a reliable self-scanning device to remain protected against dust and water. The new Joya Smart devices have an IP54 rating, a strong indicator of high performance throughout the store. An IP54 rating means that the device’s electrical enclosure is protected from limited dust ingress and from water spray coming from any direction. Furthermore, it makes it easier for staff members to clean and desinfect the devices continously.
With sustainability in mind
With the new Joya devices, retailers have the opportunity to choose between two modes: fast-charging or eco. This is one of many steps taken by Datalogic to support a more sustainable approach with the new self-scanning devices. Sustainability remains a strong focus throughout the self-scanning journey—from the use of recyclable plastics to improved and more environmentally friendly packaging methods.
The future of self-scanning is here
As retailers strive towards providing the ultimate self-scanning experience, new innovations such as the ones with Joya Smart and Joya Smart+ are pushing the limits for what is possible.
“The new Joya devices clearly show how AI can be integrated with self-scanning in a helpful and seamless way—something others have discussed but not yet realized. Our EasyShop software is already compatible with the new Joya Smart, combining the latest hardware from Datalogic with best-in-class self-scanning software,” said Fredrik Englund, Managing Director at Datema Retail.
Several manufacturers will undoubtedly follow with their own AI integrations and self-scanning innovations in an effort to stay up to date.
What is the difference between Joya Smart and Joya Smart+?
Although both Joya Smart and Joya Smart+ have been made official, there are still some surprises in store regarding the latter. According to their website, Joya Smart+ is described as having a “smartphone-like design and front-facing scanning for unmatched ease of use and higher first-time read success.”
The Joya Smart+ front-facing camera can be a game changer for retailers and their shoppers, and together the new Joya Smart and Joya Smart+ devices represent a major step toward the seamless shopping experience retailers are striving for.
